Edema refers to the buildup of fluid in the tissues present in the feet, ankles, and legs. It is usually found in pregnant women and adults who are about 65 years of age.
There are about two types of edema - peripheral edema and pulmonary edema.
Causes of swelling in the body include underlying medical conditions of kidney, gravity, pregnancy, poor nutrition, and side effects of medication. There are 4 grades of edema.

Six major causes of edema include congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disease, kidney failure, inadequate lymphatic system and long-term protein deficiency.
Lower body swelling occurs more commonly in acute kidney failure and cardiomyopathy. Swollen feet also called pedal edema occur due to prolonged sitting and standing, pregnancy, obesity and increased age group.
However, swelling can be prevented by doing regular exercise, using compression socks, a low sodium diet and elevating the leg.Treatment of edema includes diuretic medications and the use of compression stockings.
